FLOOD CONTROL DEPARTMENT

The BTC comprise of four districts viz. Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri. The main river in Kokrajhar district is River Sankosh and at down stream it is called Gangadhar. River Saralbhanga, Gaurang, Hel River, Aie, Champamati, Dulani are in Chirang district. River Beki, Manas, Puthimari, Kaldia, Pahumara and Borolia in Baksa district. River Dhansiri, Golandi, Nonoi, Kalandi, Baranadi, Kulshik, Rowta, Pagala, Ranganadi are in Udalguri district. Almost all the rivers of BTC originate from foothills of Bhutan. During unprecedented flood of 2004 the above river causes extensive damages by eroding banks and by spilling of riverbanks. The flood water carry heavy silt which get deposited in river-bed as well as agricultural land of some shallow river. Moreover due to outburst of Kurishu dam in Bhutan during 2004 the debris and silt carried by River Beki got deposited at the mouth of rver Manas and Hakua restricted the flow through the above two rivers. Thus all the discharges were flown through the river Beki carriage breach of embankment and river Beki avulsed with river Kalpani at Naraynguri carry extensive damages to Baksa district by inundation and deposit of silt damage to the public and private utilities in 2005 canalisation work at Mathanguri of river Manas was carried out under CRF fund by diverting the flow of river Beki. Partially to the river Manas and the closing work at Naraynguri was done by Barpeta E&D division. Moreover major breach closing work at Bagribari on river Puthimari was carried out in 2005 to save vast area of BTC from inundation closing of avulsion of river Kalpani was also done in 2005 under BTC thus a vast area was saved from erosion and innundation.
