FOREST BASED INDUSTRIES

Forest based industries, whether small or large scale industries are run based on the raw materials obtained/procured from forests and allied sources. Saw Mills, Paper and Pulp Industries, Plywood and Veneer Mills, Kutcha and Katha Industries, Match Factories etc. are the large scale industries. But with the shrinkage of forest areas and ban on tree felling by the Govt. as well as the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, the establishment of such large scale industries is neither advisable, feasible nor viable in BTC area. Although, there were Plywood and Veneer mills at Kokrajhar, Bijni etc., they have been stopped. One Saw Mill in each Territorial Divisions is running to meet the local demands. Handicraft industries etc. are running, which may be authorised or unauthorised. Yet, no such data is available in detail about small cottage cum forest based industries in BTC.
