The main objective of department is to ensure
safe drinking water and rural sanitation
at different rural habitations of category
NC (Not Covered) and PC (Partially Covered):
Presently as per CAP/99 (Comprehansive Action
Plan) habitation list, PHE department under
BTC has finalised N.C. habitations as 91
nos. and P.C. habitations as 1587 nos as
on 1-4-2005. The achievement so far made
by PHE Divisions under BTC.
The remaining habitations will be covered
during 2006-07. In the meantime the department
has submitted new status survey of each
habitation in terms of availability of drinking
water sources and quality thereof to the
Chief-Engineer (PHE), Assam. The status
of habitation is under process for finalisation
and awaiting for Bharat Nirman Programme.
At present surveillance of drinking water
in terms of water quality is a permanent
aspect for sustainance. Quality of drinking
water has been tested in the different locations
of BTC areas which are mentioned as follows
:-
QUALITY OF DRINKING
WATER:
Water quality is fast emerging as a major
concern globally. However more importantly
the Fluoride and Arsenic contamination has
become a major challenge for the agencies
and institutions responsible for water supply
not only in India but also in many other
foreign countries.
Present Status:
Chemical contamination of ground water has
been examined in different areas of BTC.
Presence of high & moderate Iron has
been noticed in ground water in almost 80%
of the areas.
However there is no report of presence of
Fluoride in 4 (four) districts under BTC
area. The presence of Arsenic was found
only in Rupshi Dev. Block of erstwhile Dhubri
District presently Kokrajhar District under
B.T.C.
In the above backdrop, the PHED has tested
the ground water for detection of Fluoride
& Arsenic in ground water.
