Silk Industry in BTC :
The Bodoland Territorial Council area is
endowed with climatic condition suitable
for commercial production of Muga and Eri
silks. The art of weaving cotton and silk
has long been closely associated with culture
and tradition amongst the women folk of
the Bodo community. Sericulture has provided
best ground for rural in sustaining a sizable
rural production in the BTC areas. Presently,
240 MT of Eri cocoons are produced in BTC
districts contributing around 40% of Eri
production in the state. Though recently
introduced in the Bodoland areas, Muga production
has also shown in increasing trend over
the years. However, adherence to age-old
traditional practices and use of primitiver
spinning devices are still the limiting
factors in most of the areas, which require
to be addressed for exploitation of the
existing potential. Besides, non-adoption
for improved technologies, absence of market
infrastructure and supporting linkages are
also the major constraints for development
of Muga and Eri silk industry in this district.
Non-conversion of huge quantity of Eri cocoons
into silk is depriving the people of the
area from employment and sustenance of the
industry.

The department of Sericulture, BTC implemented
various schemes in pre cocoon and post cocoon
sectors.
Under pre cocoon sector the most successful
scheme was establishment of Kesseru Seedling
Nursery and Som Seedling Nursery. To meet
the demand of rearers ten lack Kesseru Seedling
and 15 lack Som Seddling nurseries were
prepared in both govt. and private sectors.
Out of which 80% govt. production and 20%
private sector production.
In Eri sector 450 acres of land and in Muga
sector 625 acres of land covered Kesseru
and Som plantation by individual, SHG and
Community sector.
For production of Eri cocoon and Eri yarn,
Muga Reeling Cocoon, Muga Raw Silk financial
assistance provided to individual Eri and
Muga rearers. Under this programme 220 numbers
of beneficiaries were provided grants-in-aid
during the year 2005-06.
In post cocoon sector for production of
Eri yarn, 550 numbers of motorised Eri spinning
machines are working in the field both in
individual and SHG presently 220-084 MT
of Eri raw silk have been produced.

In Muga sector, 120 number Motorised CSTRI
Model Muga Reeling machines are working
and produce 12·80 MT Muga raw silk.
Besides that in the Muga sector 1 (one)
number Muga reeling unit was established
in Kokrajhar, Adabari. The main object of
the unit is to consume entire Muga reeling
cocoon which is produced in entire BTC area.
Accordingly the unit consume 8,30,000 numbers
Muga cocoons and in the unit 10 numbers
of reelers, 1 Supervisor and 1 Jugali are
working.
The produce of Muga raw silk and Eri yarn
are consumed by the weavers of the district
and also consumed by some weaving units.
Specially Muga raw silk were consumed by
the (i) Roje Eshanshali Co-operative Society
Ltd.; (ii) Bodoland Silk House, Kokrajhar;
(iii) Siskin Silk Industry, Kokrajhar; (iv)
Silk Route, Kokrajhar. They are producing
various traditional dress materials of Muga
and blended dress materials with Eri silk
which are now able to capture National and
International markets.
There are other weaving units, namely, Indi
Luo Enterprise, Kokrajhar and Alongbar Dev.
Society, Udalguri which consume Eri yarn
for producing more Eri dress materials and
also able to capture good National and International
markets.

ERI AND MUGA SILK INDUSTRY IN B.T.C.
|
| |
With the gradual restoration
of peace and willingness of the people to
take up potential economic activities for
over all development of the area, the present
State Government has identified Vanya Silk
Culture as one of the key ventures to
bring prosperity in Bodoland areas. Central
Silk Board in coordination with State Department
of Sericulture has implemented different schemes
on Muga and Eri under CDP, SGSY and UNDP sponsored
programmes providing several opportunities
for income generation through cocoon production
to product development and marketing among
the people in the area. With a view to further
consolidate the Muga and Eri Culture in the
area, a Perspective Plan for a period of 10
years (2005-2006 to 2015-2016) has been drawn
by a committee constituted by the Central
Silk Board, Bangalore with the following objectives
to implement in BTC area.
|
|
|
Inauguration
of Project THaokhri
|
a) To formulate and integrated project by
utilising the potential for development of
Muga and Eri Silk industry as household activity
in BTC areas.
b) Protect Environmental degradation through
plantation programme and adopting sustainable
eco-friendly income generating activities.
c) Improving production, productivity and
quality in Muga and Eri silk through transfer
of appropriate technologies, and
d) To introduce globally marketable designs
and diversifications in silk products through
strengthening of infrastructure, consultancy,
networking and promotional campaign.
Accordingly the project was approved by the
Ministry of Textile by Central Silk Board
under Ministry of Textile, Govt. of India
and project was launched on 20th September,
2005. As a part of perspectives plant the
present project proposal for three years project
has been approved and finalised with a plan
to produce 8 MT of Muga yarn and 14 MT of
Eri yarn. The project was implemented under
the guidance of CSB and the sharing pattern
are 50% of CSB share and 10% of BTC share
and 40% is beneficiary share. And accordingly
for the year 2005-06 the fund was released
to implement the under-mentioned programme
and successfully those schemes were implemented
as per time scheduled in the districts of
BTC. |
